Which patterns lead to sustainability?

From our early projects as a partner in SOL-ARC we developed a signature expertise in passive energy conservation systems as a principal path to sustainability; day-lighting, sun-shading, thermal mass storage, natural ventilation, user-controls, and innovative applications for materials, all predicated on adaptability.  Effectively we revived early 19th Century design strategies to leverage comfort from a 21st Century climate into zero and positive energy buildings. Our practice is based on balancing two dynamic ecosystems: natural environments (control of temperature, topography, and landscape) and cultural ecologies (serving group patterns and goals).
