Renovation of an existing auto repair shop into offices,
augmented repair facilities, and showroom
Adaptive re-use, 28,000 sf., Albany, CA
A dour, multi-garage door, conc. tilt-up structure dedicated to auto repair was transformed into a combination of upgraded repair facilities, offices and showroom. By inserting a 2nd level wood floor into the high-bay shell and adding a tail-end two story addition, the overall space was increased by 50%. The garage doors were removed, the openings raised, and two story window walls inserted. At the lobby entrance the volume is twisted and disengaged, like an ice cube popping out from it’s tray, to orient the space towards the western light and the main flow of freeway traffic. Metal sunshades protect the western elevations and skylights provide daylight to the upper level offices.
